First Post

Hello my name is Emily Dettinger and welcome to my blog! I am a sophomore studying special education K-12th grades although I am leaning towards teaching in a high school. Eventually I would love to help students with the transition from high school to a job, a day program, college, or whatever my high school students want to transition to. Furthermore, I am very interested in helping my future students with their social/life skills if they need assistance in these areas. In high school I was a part of Best Buddies which helps students with special needs make one on one friendships with students. Through this program I learned how many students with special needs struggle with the transition out of high school. If you would like to learn more about Best Buddies I have included the link to their website. Thanks! https://www.bestbuddies.org/

  1. Hi Emily! Thanks for figuring out the comment feature!

I’m really interesting in transition work – my little brother is autistic and deaf and, since he turned 18, has really benefited from an amazing transition team as they work to set him up with employment and help him manage his life. It’s really amazing to be a part of. I appreciate the work you do and the work you will do!

  2. Thanks for the link. I was very close to going for my teaching certificate in special education before I ended up choosing ESL. I currently work in behavioral health so I understand the importance of special education, especially in developing communication skills. I look forward to working with you.

  3. Hey Emily,

I’m really interested in your work with the “Best Buddies,” program. I can only imagine some of the obstacles that must be overcome for those with special needs to transfer out of their academic life into an occupation, etc. I look forward to learning more and checking in on your work.

  4. Hello Emily,

I find the fact that you want to help high schoolers transition from different new aspects of their lives very important. I remember being in high school and not necessarily having the information in order to guide me into the, “real world,” and I think that is a great aspect to pursue! I also am intrigued about your Best Buddies program. I will definitely keep tabs on that!

  5. I love that you are passionate about the transitioning process! really connecting with the students to be their support system on the inside of the building! I love the Best buddies group, like that’s so creative! We didn’t have anything like that when I was in high school! Growing up i was in Sped and it was a struggle at times especially for classes that i struggled with because of my IEP so it would have been a major plus to have that as an option! great link, cant wait to hear more of your stuff.
